From Prediction to Participation: Designing Clinical AI for Real-world Care Delivery

Join Associate Professor Maame Yaa “Maya” Yiadom from Stanford University as she explore the integration of AI into real-world healthcare delivery. Attendees will gain a framework for thinking about clinical AI not simply as software, but as a new member of the healthcare team whose role, responsibilities, and limits must be deliberately designed.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly moving beyond prediction toward active participation in clinical care. Rather than simply identifying patients at risk, emerging systems can recommend testing, prioritise workflows, and even initiate clinical actions. These capabilities create tremendous opportunities to improve quality and consistency of care. However, they also expose challenges that extend well beyond model development.

Drawing on the development and implementation of autonomous AI for emergency department screening of acute coronary syndrome, this seminar will examine what has been learned about integrating AI into real-world healthcare delivery. Topics will include why AI often performs best as a clinical failsafe rather than a replacement for human expertise, how implementation requires redesigning clinical workflows in addition to technical integration, and why governance becomes increasingly important as AI begins influencing patient care.

Through practical examples from a multi-hospital implementation effort, attendees will gain a framework for thinking about clinical AI not simply as software, but as a new member of the healthcare team whose role, responsibilities, and limits must be deliberately designed.

About the Speaker

A/Prof. Maame Yaa “Maya” Yiadom, MD, MPH, MSCI

Associate Professor, Emergency Medicine, Stanford University

Maame Yaa “Maya” Yiadom, MD, MPH, MSCI is an emergency physician, health services researcher, entrepreneur, and founder of SmartCareAI, where she leads the development of clinical intelligence systems designed to integrate artificial intelligence into real-time healthcare delivery. She is also an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University, where her research focuses on improving the quality, safety, and equity of emergency care through clinical decision support, implementation science, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Yiadom’s interdisciplinary training spans public policy, health policy, clinical medicine, clinical investigation, and healthcare innovation. She earned her undergraduate degree in Public Policy from Princeton University, an MPH in Health Policy and Management from Johns Hopkins University, completed residency training in Emergency Medicine and a fellowship in Population Health and Health Policy at Harvard Medical School, earned an MSCI in Clinical Investigation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and completed Stanford Biodesign’s Faculty Fellowship in Innovation. This diverse training has shaped her approach to translating emerging technologies into healthcare systems in ways that improve patient outcomes while remaining practical, scalable, and clinically meaningful. Dr. Yiadom’s work advances the science of translating artificial intelligence from research into routine clinical practice.
