RADAR-ES: Development of a methodological framework for environmental scans and roadmap for future research in digital health

Environmental scans (ESs) have been widely used in health services delivery research and other related areas such as professional development and management practices. Originating in the disciplines of business and information sciences in the 1960s, ESs became an integral part of strategic planning to identify trends and potential threats to inform decision-making to improve organizational performance.

ESs have been used to examine a range of services, practices, policies, issues, technologies and other phenomena in health care through collection, synthesis, and analysis of existing and potentially new data to shape responses in dynamic and constantly changing environments. However, there has been a lack of guidance in how to plan and conduct an ES and inconsistency in how ESs are reported in the literature.

In this session, the conceptualisation and development of RADAR-ES, a methodological framework for ESs in health services delivery research, will be presented. The process and framework of RADAR-ES may serve as a potential roadmap for developing approaches to research in digital health.
