AI literacy in the Age of AI: What Does It Mean and What Does It Require?

AI is increasingly transforming Australia’s economy, public services and legal system. Recognising both the opportunities and risks presented by AI, the Australian Government released the National AI Plan in December 2025. 

Central to the National AI Plan is the recognition of AI literacy as a key foundation for responsible AI adoption.

But what AI literacy involves is not straightforward.  It has been argued that, AI literacy is not simply about technical proficiency; it is about developing the critical judgment needed to understand AI’s capabilities and limitations, evaluate its output, and make informed decisions about when, how and why AI should be used.

This event seeks to explore that question with an expert panel, including from The University of Melbourne, the National AI Centre and the CSIRO. 

We also will seek contributions from the audience in exploring this important discussion, and the policy paper that will follow.
